RE: Luxel experiences

We have completed the transition to Luxel badges for 3 account that included
over 60 series codes. The actual change over was pretty easy you just let
Landauer know what format you want to use and the series code name that you
want to use. This was the only prep that we had to do.

We have badges that are being exchanged on a monthly and quarterly basis.
Most of the change comes from having the range change from 10 mrem to 1
mrem. A lot of badges no read less than 5 mrem where before they were M.
Not much response other than why less than 10 mrem which is easily
explained.

The biggest problem that we encounter is losing the badges. Either the clip
with the dosimeter is pulled off or the dosimeter is lost with the clip
still intact on the individual. This is probably the biggest drawback from
going to the Luxel badge. The clip seems to be pretty easy to lose because
individuals clip it on a smooth surface which the badge can not grip.

One thing to watch for on the Luxel report is note code that indicate the
gamma portion was lost in processing. We have had several occasions that
this has happened and it takes Landauer a week or two to send the request to
find out were the badge went. The response from Landauer that I got was the
reading from the badges was not entered into the Landauer mainframe
database. If this is the case then before the reports leave Landauer the
reports are not being checked for errors. We have also gotten at least one
report with the neutron portion being lost in processing. The only response
to this was that they could not find the badge anywhere.

If you have any further question please let me know.

I, too, would be interested in hearing about others' experiences with
changeover to the Luxel dosimeters as we are planning this changeover for
January. Specifically, I would like to know what (if any) worker
preparation was done beforehand. How often do you exchange badges? Did
you see any change in reported exposures? If so, what was worker response
to this? What else...
