Maine Yankee Decommissioning Begins

Maine Yankee Decommissioning Begins - (WISCASSET) -- Parts of the
closed Maine Yankee nuclear power plant will soon be shipped to
disposal facilities in Utah and South Carolina as the plant's
decommissioning begins. A Maine Yankee spokesperson says three
reactor coolant pump motors will be shipped by rail to a Utah
disposal facility for low-level radioactive waste. The pumps
themselves will have to be transported by truck to South Carolina in
special metal containers because of their higher levels of
radioactive contamination. The reactor vessel itself will also be
sent to South Carolina by barge within the next three years.
