HazMat Company Offers School Money

HazMat Company Offers School Money - (TOOELE) -- A South Carolina
company specializing in storing hazardous waste is offering to give
the Tooele School District 21-Million-dollars to build desperately-
needed new schools. But "The Salt Lake Tribune" reports that Safety-
Kleen says it needs permission to store low-level radioactive waste,
a request county officials have already denied. Tooele County
Commissioner Gary Griffiths says the donation "smacks of a bribe."
But Lowell Peterson, the company's Utah lobbyist, says the offer
can't be a bribe because the school district has NO jurisdiction over
waste matters. The company runs a hazardous waste landfill in Grassy
Mountain, about 70 miles west of Salt Lake City.
