Excellent comment, Stewart! I hope I am allowed to forward it in case
similar questions would turn up for me!

Hello all,
Potassium [along with Na and Mg ] as an electrolyte [whether K-40 or stable

K-39] is important to the maintenance of osmotic balance in everything from
unicellular organisms, to insects, up to complex higher species [like
humans --most of the time]. This key role for K+ [typically present as
KCl] has nothing to do with energy, but with electrolyte balance.

If it were not for K in cellular fluids as a major electrolyte which allow
for "pumping" water against an osmotic gradient, water which has exited a
higher organism [like humans] with waste/breakdown products via its kidney
tubules into its dilute urine in the first stage of one's kidney, to be
resorbed in the final stage of the kidney tubules, osmotic balance would be

thrown off and life could not exist.
