PSC OKs additional capacity for FP&L plants

The Florida Public Service Commission on Monday approved Florida
Power and Light Co.'s petition to expand nuclear power capacity at
two power plants.

The approved plan calls for the Juno Beach-based utility to add 414
megawatts of nuclear generating capacity to two units at Turkey Point
near Homestead and two units on Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie
County, beginning in 2011 and 2012.

FPL Group (NYSE: FPL - News), the parent of FP&L, said it needed the
increase to handle the demands brought on by the expected increase of
its customer base -- from 4.4 million to 5.9 million by 2016 -- and
maintain its 20 percent reserve margin.

FPL spokesman Mayco Villafana said the upgrade will cost $1.5 billion
and will be done between 2009 and 2012. He said it will add 21 cents
per 1,000 kilowatt hours to customers' bills beginning 2013.

The commission did not approve any nuclear new nuclear reactors.
FPL's separate proposal for a new nuclear reactor plant to Turkey
Point is slated to come before the commission in January.

Thursday, FPL said it plans to increase its capacity in Palm Beach
County beginning 2011 by either adding a natural gas-fired power
plant to its West County Energy Center or buying power from other
companies.
