AW: AW: [ RadSafe ] New Airport X-Rays Scan Bodies, Not Just Bags

When looking for former contributions to RADSAFE I found this message, which
I intended to answer but had forgotten to do so.

To answer your question about my qualifications there are two points:

1) I am a chemist by profession (with a PhD, not a technician, though as you
observed correctly I do not like to be addressed with a title!), who turned
into a radiochemist.

2) Shortly before the discussion there was a programme at a German TV
station, where this question was addressed. The German federal research
institute for explosives definitely stated, that it was not possible to
produce an explosive by mixing two liquids on board an airplane. They
demonstrated, how to produce an explosive (I do not remember the name) from
two liquids, about a liter each. This included carefully controlled reaction
under intensive cooling under usual laboratory condition in glass
instruments, constant stirring over night, filtering and finally drying the
precipitate. They also showed by exploding it, that the power of it was very
weak. You still believe that this all can be done at the toilet of an
aircraft?????

With best regards,

Franz

The latest story about the liquids attempted to produce explosives on the
airplane as published in Great Britain has since led to some chaos at
European
airports, of which I was many times affected last year. Women had to discard

their very expensive perfumes, children had to discard their
Coke, tooth paste, hand moisturing cremes etc. etc. had to be discarded.
After the control, big signs advertised, that all parfumes, beverages,
tooth
pastes, cremes etc. could be paid at the shops in this area......

Mr. Schoenhofer (as you seemingly would prefer to be address I hope I
spelled it right and that you are acceptable to this salutation?)

In respect to the above comment I'd like to know YOUR qualifications in the

area of binary (or more) chemical explosives?

Thank you.
