You're right, of course, but that isn't the point. It's about control, and any excuse (or pretense) will suffice. As I recall, the U.S. has the highest percentage of its population in prison of any country in the world. Apparently that's not enough for some.

2) Shortly before the discussion there was a programme at a German TV station, where this question was addressed. The German federal research institute for explosives definitely stated, that it was not possible to produce an explosive by mixing two liquids on board an airplane. They demonstrated, how to produce an explosive (I do not remember the name) from two liquids, about a liter each. This included carefully controlled reaction under intensive cooling under usual laboratory condition in glass instruments, constant stirring over night, filtering and finally drying the precipitate. They also showed by exploding it, that the power of it was very weak. You still believe that this all can be done at the toilet of an aircraft?????
