[ RadSafe ] TLD Readings in Checked Luggage

Rainer:

I had one case in 2005, and the measured dose for a return flight between Canada and the US, including luggage scans, was 1.4 millisievert to both "skin" and "whole body".

The worker never had any dose reading before or after that incident. He worked only with P-32, so a legitimate whole body dose was unlikely. I had the dose removed from his record at the National Dose Registry in Canada.

Sincerely,

Colette

Linda:

Unless you remove your TLD chips after passing the (hand-) luggage check and read them out before take-off of your plane, the dose received during the flight (several micro-Sv) may well dwarf the dose from the check (approx. 1 - 2 micro-Sv).

Hi All,

Has anyone had any experience with the TLD doses to expect if a TLD is placed in checked luggage? If so, please give me a call or send me an e-mail with the dose received and the estimated energies.

Thanks,

Linda
