I watched most of the show.  I caught it after it started and wanted to see how it turned out.  The source was a room irradiator.  The show played up the warning lights and sounds and gm meters, but at the end is they explained that they learned they wouldn't get contaminated or even exposed.  The test subjects were placed in individual compartments to get a uniform dose.
