The terms we used at Hanford in the '90s were "calibration" to insure that 
we knew what, and how much, of a radioisotope was measured and "check 
source" to insure that the instrument was still operating to the standard it 
was calibrated to.

Could anyone please enlighten a stupid European and non-native speaker with
the word "calibration"? We have here two different words which might both
refer to "calibration". To make it short: "Kalibrierung" is something which
can be done in the respective laboratory, using sources provided by
institutions or companies tracing their results to some internationally
accepted standards. (Please you at NIST do not flame me, I know you have all
reasons to do so for my scientific ignorance.....) On the other side we have
the "Eichung", which is something which is done by the relevant official
authority and  comprises everything from balances at the market to ...
everything else.

I appreciate your informations about "calibration". Thank you!

I interpreted "calibration" in this case not to be using a known source
to make sure the instrument was operating within expected parameters,
but using the source it was expected to find to make sure it would find
it.  If that is the case, I agree with the auditor that it invalidates
the event as being an actual test of the detector's capabilities.
Unless all smugglers are required to give advanced warning in writing,
so the detectors can be set up for the isotope that will be coming
through.
