Safety Technician II (Radiation & Hazardous Waste)

Position Summary:
Perform radioactive contamination surveys; process incoming packages of radioactive materials, biological and/or controlled substances and transport packages from receiving to processing area; remove radioactive waste from labs and transport it to the processing facility; maintain inventory of group supplies, replenishing as necessary; and perform manual and electronic recordkeeping.

May also provide backup coverage for hazardous waste safety technicians including: remove hazardous waste from laboratories and transport it to the processing facility; process and package chemical waste (bulk and lab pack) for off-site disposal. Will also perform other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as required or assigned.

May participate in departmental emergency response efforts involving hazardous materials and provide basic technical guidance to research employees.

Physical Requirements:
With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to lift 50 pounds and pass a respirator physical. Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

Basic Qualifications:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained. Requires a minimum of 2+ years of Environmental Health and Safety experience. Candidates with a related Bachelor's degree may qualify with 0-1 year of experience. Must have a valid California driver license and a good driving record. Background check required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in a physical science or related discipline is preferred.

Compensation:
$19.40-$24.25 per hour
