[ RadSafe ] RE: Radionuclear

To my mind, using "radionuclear" is a big step up for journalists et al. The fact that it's meaning is unclear means that most readers will read right past it instead of pausing to dissect it. Compared to their gut reaction to "deadly radioactive," that's a plus.
