James,
You asked, "What is the best course of action? At the time it seemed like indicating to the colleagues of the person making the statements in question that he might not be acting in their firm's best interest was appropriate. What would have been a better way to proceed? Is there a difference between the most ethical and most practical courses of action?"
Radsafe is a listserver where information requests, ideas and opinions can be shared. Radsafe provides a venue where an open dialogue can take place, and the threat of taking one's opinions, comments or otherwise to their employer, is simply not acceptable. The opinions shared, accurate or not, does not result in a "life-or-death" situation where a mistaken comment results in a serious consequence. If there is inaccuracy, other members openly discuss. For any member to take comments off of a listserver and go to their employer, simply because someone believes that the information is incorrect, serves no useful purpose. The implied intent as I see it is to censor the list with threats of going to external entities with that member's own spin. What is your intent?
You ask what course of action to take? Simple, provide your feedback, your facts and let the debate and/or dialogue continue. Leave external entities out of the discussion.
