Barbara,
Excellent point on "statistics"! Another one - a joke (?) - "I do not
believe in any statistics that I have not falsified myself".
Not a joke: After the Chernobyl accident surprisingly large numbers of
thyroid cancers were diagnosed very shortly after the accident - no doubt,
well documented and statistically well confirmed!!!! Furthermore a lot of
other cancers were diagnosed, which were by some activists attributed to the
influence of the accident. (Leukemia after a few weeks!) It turned out that
diagnosis methods had been refined and that the excess was solely due to the
better diagnosis methods in this part of the world and not to the accident.
I have the links somewhere (not in electronic form), but I am sorry, that I
am not going to spend my precious time to search for them for a few
RADSAFErs. Have a look at for instance the IAEA proceedings of the
conferences on the Chernobyl accident.
I really do not want to downplay the Chernobyl accident - but not all of the
evil in this world can be attributed to it!

Hi Emilio, These are my guesses but a lot was changing in the US in the
latter part of the 20th century. This peak may be linked to the following
changes:
decreases in cigarette smoking
increased regulations in environmental protection and worker protection.
better medical diagnostic techniques being developed in the 70s and 80s so
that cancer was more correctly identified.
Do any of the medical people know if Medical Examiner requirements for
auopsy or diagnosis changed around these times? Thaat would add to better
diagnosis as well.

Subject: [ RadSafe ] Doubts on Cancer Statistics
Hello Radsafers, searching for cancer statistics i run across
http://statecancerprofiles.cancer.gov" where I found a peak in the number of
ancer cases around 1990. Could someone explain the reason of this to me?
houldn't this behaviour be unsual?
The first one provides a clearer view of what i'm talking about, the second
page
as a string-generated one I made to check he tendencies in every state,
lthough it takes a few seconds to load:
