[ RadSafe ] Chernobyl-related abortions

Dear Colette, (Chere Colette),
Could you please give me a link to the paper you mentioned? (Je comprend un
peu de francais.) I am not aware of any IAEA paper on this topic, though I
have worked closely with the iAEA during and after the Chernobyl accident.
Concerning Austria I can assure you, that there never was any advice to
terminate a pregnancy. Again I think all those rumors are hearsay and doubt
that even IAEA had any reliable data at hand.
I can confirm that the fear for contaminated food, especially milk powder
was very wide spread. It is the opinion in underdeveloped countries that
those developed countries only donate spoiled food, not fit for consumption
in the developed countries. What a nonsense.
Best regards,
Franz

Hi:
The reference is:
Lessons of Chernobyl: SNM Members Try to Decontaminate World Threatened by
Fallout
Linda E. Ketchum
J Nucl Med 28: 933-942.
On page 938:
"According to the IAEA, an estimated 100,000-200,000 wanted pregnancies were
aborted in Western Europe because physicians mistakenly advised patients
that the radiation from Chernobyl posed a significant health risk to unborn
children."
Just another case of radiophobia! Another one: I was living in South America
at the time, and many poor people did not consume the powdered milk given to
them by European relief agencies, because they feared that it would be
contaminated.
