Without taking sides here, I'd like to say that "if that's his real name" is a comic line.  "Well, Brad (Bill, Barney, etc.), if that's your real name . . ." has been said in more than one movie comedy.  I for one think it's pretty harmless, though it's one of those lines to use with a smile.

his name.  Don't you think that is   just a little out of line?  I
