We did contact J.L. Shepherd and got a quote from them, but were also trying to explore some other (perhaps less expensive?) possibilities.

Not sure of all of the history, but J.L. Sheperd has manufactured similar
calibration irradiators for decades and is located in Burbank. He may have
made yours or at least be familiar with it. Not likely that many will be
interested in 137Cs of that vintage - likely leaker - but he would probably
quote services for removal (probably not cheap). I would press the issue
with OSRP as that type of source as you would expect is the target for
securing such materials. If they can give you a reason for not addressing
this, they should be able to refer you to an alternative; otherwise, what is
their mission? You could also contact Hopewell Designs / Hopewell
Enterprises in Alpharetta, GA who also make such devices.

Thank you very much for the tips. At some point we did contact OSRP, but
from what I understand, the removal of our source was not quite consistent
with their mission. The irradiator is rather large, about 6 feet tall, which
is why we thought we would try to remove the source for disposal, e.g., from
behind the shield wall using manipulators. That is why I was looking for
the information on how the irradiator was constructed inside.

Hi,
I had a similar problem 25 years ago involving 200 curies of Co-60
in an experimental device which I designed and built. I had a complete set
of drawings, but I did not try to remove the sources.
I got a type B shipping container from Chem Nuclear Systems, loaded
the device, mixed and poured in concrete and shipped for disposal.
This is expensive and does not help you much.
