The "unexpected problems and drawbacks" were the same then that we
suffer now with conventional production reactors.

I don't believe that there were any crippling challenges inherent to the
design.  If we consider the broadest definition of liquid,
incompressible fluid, then a molten fuel is a continuum with a pebble bed.
