Hi all,

I think there have been some odd notes put out there including, "stop me before I kill again" and "took a vote. Kill again" regarding Caldicott's article.  I have to agree with M. Sato that these are odd statements, and although I grew up in this culture, I flinched rather than laughed - although I believe humor and venting frustration were the authors' goals.

I don't know if Caldicott's a quack or not, but from what I've read, I'd definitely say her understanding of radiation, its uses, risks and benefits are not well understood by her.  She tried to give the impression that M.D. 's do no harm, but the health physicists do - I definitely take exception to that and would remind her that radiology, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine are standard medical programs.  Having a medical degree does not eliminate ones ability or risk of causing harm.  I am concerned that Caldicott seems to be spreading a misguided understanding of radiological risk and that she does not appear to consider the exposure going on in her own field of employment, which tends to be the highest lifetime source of radiation exposure for most individuals.

I also think that planned exposure in a radon health mine is not the same as uncontrolled exposure to miners in earlier years.  I can't answer for all on this list, but it's my opinion that there probably is radiation hormesis , but establishing the appropriate levels of exposure for individuals in non-illness cases has not occurred.  (I hope Howard and Luckey have it right, because they seem like interesting good-hearted folks.)  I wouldn't be surprised if relaxing in a radon health mine reduced stress and contributed to longevity.  Also believing that something does harm or good is a powerful initiator (placebo effect).

I recall Ms. Manners saying something to the effect that it is impolite to tell others to be polite.  Not that I'm telling anybody to be polite (I am smiling, thinking my last statement is funny, but worried that many of you will think it is not and borders on being impolite.)

Wishing you all well and many friendly discussions with colleagues and acquaintances,

Cindy Bloom

I don't recall any general "support" of radon mines; I think the attitude is more one of dismissal as quackery.  Nor do I recall anyone advocating that Helen Caldicott (who is not, by the way, in any way a scientist) be "killed".  Indeed, I believe the overwhelming consensus is that she is a quack, though likely more harmful to mankind's overall health than radon mines.

Mr. Sato , you are obviously not a native English speaker, so I will accept that you are not familiar with our culture.  If you take the time to learn about our culture, it might save you embarrassment in front of the people you wish to converse with.  The subject line and first paragraph of your post are an attempt to place words in the mouths of others; to make it appear that they are taking an unreasonable position.  It is not even a very good attempt.  That you would try something this intellectually dishonest, and be so poor at it, causes you to lose a great deal of face in front of the people you are taking too.  Indeed, you have already lost so much face that most people on radsafe are embarrassed to be seen conversing with you, as they are concerned that your incorrect behavior will reflect badly on them.  They are mindful of the saying, "don't wrestle with a pig; you will get dirty, and the pig will enjoy it more than you will".

If you are interested in knowing more about radiation, radsafe is a fairly good place to learn, but you first must learn to be polite.
