The University of Connecticut's Department of Environmental Health & Safety in Storrs, CT is seeking a Radiation Safety Specialist to provide support services for radiation and laser safety programs, including radiological emergency response.  This position serves as technical expert in the area of radiation safety reporting to the Radiation Safety Manager.  Responsibilities include inspecting and monitoring equipment, facilities, personnel, and work environments for compliance with Federal, State, and University regulations; developing and administering safety guidelines and training programs; calibrating survey and monitoring instruments; preparing radioactive materials and waste shipments; maintaining records and associated databases; and providing consultation to University faculty, staff, and students regarding appropriate health and safety procedures.  Travel to UConn regional campuses will be required.



Qualifications





Minimum qualifications include: Master's degree in health physics or related discipline and two years of experience in the radiation safety field; or Bachelor's degree in health physics or related discipline and four years of experience in the radiation safety field.  Applicant must be knowledgeable of NRC regulations and applicable laws and nationally recognized standards and guidelines along with demonstrated experience in recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards.  Must have excellent supervisory skills, excellent interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills and strong computer skills with the ability to calculate and prepare data for reports.  The incumbent must be willing and able to promptly respond in-person to emergency situations outside of normal working hours, travel to UConn regional campuses and possess a valid driver's license.  This position requires handling of low-level radioactive waste and requires the ability to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, the ability to lift large containers and equipment, and handle 55-gallon drums weighing up to several hundred pounds as needed.  Successful candidate must also submit to and pass a background and FBI criminal history check in compliance with NRC security requirements.



Preference will be given to applicants with experience in an academic/research environment and applicants with laser safety and training experience.  Additional desired qualifications include appropriate professional certification or ability to earn certification within five years; and current IATA, DOT and RCRA training.



Appointment Terms



This is a full-time, permanent position which includes a full range of medical, dental, and retirement benefits.  The anticipated hiring salary range is mid-fifties.
