RadSafers,

Indeed the USSR attempted to stimulate gas field by so-called peaceful nuclear explosions (cf. http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/Non-Power-Nuclear-Applications/Industry/Peaceful-Nuclear-Explosions/). As already indicated by Doug not a good idea as here mr Busby's (not natural gas, but fission product filled) cavity with vitrified walls is formed. Stimulation only had a very temporary stimulation effect, but the drawback indeed is contamination of the produced gas.

Regards,
Gert

This was actually done in the US (Rulison, Co) and , as part of the"ploughshares" program. A nice "propo" film here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myXswNUQgLs

And wiki;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Rulison

not a good idea!

Now the industry uses hydraulic fracturing - "Fracking" - which is highly successful, but somewhat controversial......

Regards
Doug

Importance: High

RADSAFE,

I remember now a funny incidence: Some day, more than 20 years ago some green idxxts claimed without any factual background, that the USSR (or maybe it was already the GUS) had exploded nuclear bombs to enhance the output of natural gas from their oilfields and that Kr-85 was therefore in the gas and of course a deadly threat for anybody using this Russian gas. I also remember a friend from the ministry calling me, whether we were able to check for Kr-85 the supply of gas in Vienna. I have always liked to react on any possible and especially impossible radiation problem with unconventional solutions. We bubbled our Viennese gas supply through a column filled with a mineral oil scintillation cocktail filled bubbler. We found very nice peaks of Rn-222 and its progenies, but no indication of Kr-85. End of the story - it never came up again.

This is not actually the end of my post - I have more to tell regarding radon at my next one.

In the meanwhile

Best regards,

Franz

Hi All,

Just a quote from his wrecking report. He seems to know it all no matter what the subject is.

Quote
Fracking will increase the amount of Radon in the extracted gas. Why?
Because of the high surface area created by smashing up the rock. In the simple gas or oil well there is a big cavern. The radon seeps out of the wall which has a surface area equal to that of the cavern wall. But in the case of the fracked strata, the surface area out of which the Radon can seep is enormously enhanced. So a faster Radon transfer can occur.
Unquote

Never known that natural gas was contained in big sub-surface cavern, but you are never too old to learn. Guess he is too busy with writing blogs, instead of reading basic textbooks.

Ah, the ever popular Chris Busby. I am amazed that, given how bad the situation at Fukushima actually is, that Chris feels the need to make things sound worse. I suppose this comes from a professional lifetime of needing to lie because the truth just won't cooperate.

We haven't heard from Chris Busby in quite some time, but here is an article he published. A colleague sent me this and there he was!
