No doubt that a lethal radiation dose was imparted in nanoseconds, followed by traumatic lethal injury shortly thereafter. It is somewhat amazing that a bone fragment was found at all, considering the intense thermal radiation. The piece of mandible could have been closer to the hypocenter at detonation and then transported to its place of discovery by the blast wave. Seems a plausible explanation for the dose disparity.

There seems to be a discrepancy between RERF and the new measurement. Bone measurement at 1.5 km in Hiroshima was stated to be 9.46 Gy (to jaw bone), however RERF seems to show 0.5 Sv on a graph.

Could the difference be dose to jawbone was ~20X higher than whole body estimate?

I don't find the radiation dose, of more than 9 gray, to be "staggering" at all, considering proximity to the blast hypocenter. What is your overall take on the LiveScience website?

This article is by Brazilian scientist who first reported on this in the 70's and now has improved tools to garner more information about how much radiation this casualty at Hiroshima's jaw bone received not far from ground zero.
