RE: Laboratory Ventilation Standards
Tim:
I checked in "Design of Biomedical Research Facilities," Proc of a Symp
conducted by NCI in 1979; NIH Publ 81-2305. In there I cited the following:
Heinonen notes that ventilation with one-pass air and a negative pressure of a
few mm of water is proper for low-level labs; a max of 20 room air changes per
hour. Nixon and Chapman suggest 12 changes / hr is adequate, with a press drop
of 5 mm of water. These fellows wrote articles in IAEA Publ. IAEA-SM-209/47,
"Design of and Equipment for Hot Laboratories." IAEA STI/PUB/436.
In my experience, the release of rad material does not dictate design special
beyond that for routine lab space, with the exception of nucl med departments.
Last time I checked, Reg Guide 10.8, App O (like letter "oh") had a method for
calculations in this case. Go to
http://www.nrc.gov/NRC/RG/10/10-008r2.html#_1_48 and search for APPENDIX O.
Also of value: "Industrial Ventilation" (A Manual of Recommend Practice).
American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists."
