Britain to try to persuade Japan not to return MOX fuel
They should have thought about this before they falsified QA records!
Britain to try to persuade Japan not to return MOX fuel
LONDON, Jan. 13 (Kyodo) - The British government will try to persuade
Japan not to return a consignment of plutonium-uranium mixed oxide
(MOX) nuclear fuel rejected by Kansai Electric Power Co. (KEPCO), the
Guardian newspaper reported Thursday.
The paper said London is so alarmed at the prospect of having to
spend millions of pounds on sending the ships to Japan to collect the
fuel that a delegation, already scheduled to visit Tokyo, will ask
Japanese ministers to veto the plan.
Earlier this week KEPCO announced it would return a recent shipment
of MOX after it was reported that some of the quality assurance
checks performed by the manufacturer, British Nuclear Fuels Ltd
(BNFL), were suspect.
The fuel was intended for the No. 4 reactor at KEPCO's Takahama
nuclear plant and arrived in Japan from Britain on Oct. 1.
If BNFL was to ship the fuel back to Britain the operation would be
very costly and the company would need permission from other
countries before the shipment could begin.
The Guardian report also says the British government fears censure
from other countries if it ships the fuel across the world again.
The Department of Trade and Industry refused to comment on the
report, but confirmed the delegation would be having discussions with
the Japanese government and that the trip was intended to restore
confidence in BNFL.
