RE: Iron in drinking waters

For information on metals in groundwater, you may wish to try the U.S.
Geological Survey site for information on local water supplies at the
following address: http://water.usgs.gov/wrd002.html An additional site by
EPA, the National Drinking Water Contaminant Occurrence Database, may
likewise provide the information you seek: http://www.epa.gov/ncod/.
Additionally, if you are particularly interested in groundwaters in a
certain location within a state, you might try searching EPA's Records of
Decision (RODs) for "Superfund" sites in the relevant location to obtain
information on site and off-site (background) metals in groundwater.
Finally, when examining data for metals in groundwater, pay attention to
whether the metal is reported as "total" or "dissolved"; the total metals
measurement will report particulate as well as dissociated metals; the
dissolved measurement reflects a filtered sample, while not truly
"dissolved," it is a closer approximation than "total."
