BWCHPS Meeeting. Dr. Goans (REAC/TS), Radiation Injuries

Dear All-this is a reminder to please make reservations as soon as
possible so we can accomodate you for dinner/lecture seating. This lecture will
be of general interest, therefore, feel free to invite non-HP/Nuclear
professional friends. If you cannot make dinner, you can still enjoy the
presentation, without any fee. Just let me know that you are coming.

THE ANNUAL JOINT MEETING OF THE BALTIMORE-WASHINGTON CHAPTER OF THE
HEALTH PHYSICS SOCIETY, AND THE LOCAL AMERICAN NUCLEAR SOCIETY

	FEBRUARY 25, 2000 DINNER MEETING

	SPEAKER: RONALD E. GOANS, Ph.D., M.D.

The BWCHPS is very pleased and fortunate to have Dr. Ronald Goans as our
guest lecturer for this BWCHPS/ANS annual joint meeting. Since 1994 Dr. Goans
has served at the Section Leader, Medical Services, Radiation Emergency
Assistance Center and Training Site (REAC/TS), at Oak Ridge Associated
Universities, Oak Ridge, TN. Dr. Goans has provided medical consultation on
diagnosis and treatment of actual and suspected radiation exposures. He
performs long-term medical follow-up for selected radiation exposure victims,
and serves as Registrar, U.S. Radiation Accident Registry and DTPA Registry.
Dr. Goans lectures on medical effects of radiation exposure to health
physicists, emergency planners, and health care professionals. He provides
technical support in the field of radiation medicine to the Department of
Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other Federal and state agencies.
Dr. Goans served as team physician, Project Sapphire (retrieval of
highly-enriched uranium from Kazakhstan); technical advisor, DOE consultant with
Uruguay on Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and continues to develop methods
for early estimation of radiation dose.

At intervals between 1983 and 1994, Dr. Goans worked at the National
Institutes of Health, Laboratory of Theoretical and Physical Biology, as a
National Research Service Award Fellow and as a Senior Staff Fellow, and as a
practicing physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology at several hospitals in
Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Dr. Goans received his Doctor of
Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine in 1983, and Doctor
of Philosophy from the University of Tennessee Department of Physics, 1974. He
has 35 publications, and a myriad of honors. Dr. Goans is also an Associate
Editor of the Health Physics Journal.

	Dr. Goans' lecture abstract follows:

Radiation medicine is a unique branch of medicine that requires a close
working relationship between both the physician and health physicist or nuclear
engineer. Medical management of patients with systemic or local injury due to
high level radiation dose is complicated and requires input from both the
disciplines of medicine and physics. This presentation will first examine
whole-body injury and the clinical presentation of the acute radiation syndrome
along with certain mathematical techniques that might be used to offer medical
personnel an early estimate of whole-body dose (8-12 hours post-accident).
Local radiation injury will then be discussed in conjunction with typical
accident scenarios and a discussion of medical management. Examples of clinical
cases will be taken from recent accidents in Florida, Peru, Japan, and from
certain historical cases of interest.

We thank Dr. Goans in advance for making this special trip to Bethesda from Oak
Ridge to share with us his knowledge and experiences related to medical,
industrial, and reactor radiation accidents.
