Re: Rad Conditions in Kiev

Not much different from most parts of the world.  The food here still has small amounts of Chernobyl contamination in it, but not enough to represent much of a health threat.  The government monitors the food supplies.  Alot of the food is sold at open air markets scattered throughout the city.  This food is locally grown, hence the contamination.  There is a growning number of Western style stores that sell imported canned food.  The Ukraine Radiation Protection Institute monitors a number of people in Kiev and they report a range of Cs-137 burdens of betwen less than 100  Bq of Cs-137 and a high of around 4,000 Bq.  Probably the biggest health threat is the water supply and that is due to antique piping, but is not a radiological hazard.

Hope that helps.

Does anyone know (or able to point me to a web site) what the radiological
conditions are currently like in Kiev?  My brother/sister-in-law have job
opportunities there as teachers, and would move their family there for a
year or two.  They asked me to find out what I could.  Before I scrounge
about the web for hours, I thought I'd ask if anyone happens to know first.

Thanks!
