I posted a news article several weeks ago, which contained interviews 
from Mr. Hisashi Ouchi's family (the first individual to die). In 
their statements, they were in agreement with all of the steps taken 
to prolong life, and even stated that it was hoped that the 
information gained would help save lives in the future, from 
accidents involving radiation exposure.

So, the answer is yes, the families were deeply involved in the 
decision, as should always be the case.
