Frightened residents force family to shift cremation rite

Relatives of a victim who died from cobalt-60 radiation last week called off
cremation rites yesterday after objections from people living near the wat
where the rites were to be held.
Leaders of the community near Wat Rang Bua, Thon Buri, were afraid the
cremation would spread radiation sickness among them.
About 1,200 people in Soi Phet Kasem 23, Phasi Charoen district, signed a
petition demanding the rites for Niphon Phanthukan be held elsewhere despite
assurances from the Office of Atomic Energy for Peace that there was no
danger.
