Re: Critics Allege Infant Mortality Rate

April 25, 2000
Davis, CA

According to the article FEDS IGNORE HEALTH EFFECTS TO KEEP NUKES RUNNING
which appeared in
The Nation April 10, 2000 by Joseph J. Mangano (a professional writer, not
a scientist):
"The NRC actions continue industry and government's tradition of ignoring
and suppressing information on harmful health effects from reactor
emissions. Calvert Cliffs is a case in point. The Commission recently
determined that the chance of a dangerous accident at the plant over 60
years was 1 in 83, four times higher than similar reactors and twice NRC's
goal....The NRC placed the two reactors on its "watch list" several times,
and both were shut for repairs for a year in the late 1980s.
Perhaps most disturbingly, since 1990 the death rate among children
and young adults has risen rapidly in the six-county area downwind and
within 50 miles of the plant. Childhood cancer deaths have tripled."

Does anyone know anything about the claim that childhood cancer deaths have
tripled since 1990 in six counties?
