Working Title: Health Physicist
Payroll Title: SPECIALIST, E.H.&S. II
Position Overview: Responsible for the design, development and
implementation of several specialty programs. Design duties include: 1) the
enhancement of an environmental monitoring program: 2) enhancement and
maintenance of an in-depth x-ray machine program; and 3) assisting with the
continued development of the radiation safety audit program.
Responsible for conducting many of the daily operational aspects of the
Radiation Safety Program.
Operational duties include: 1) performing research laboratory health physics
audits of radioactive users' facilities, x-ray machines, lasers, microwaves
and RF, and hospital facilities and satellite clinics: 2) collection and
counting of environmental monitoring samples 3) designing and developing 4)
assist with the functioning of the Radioisotopes Shipping and Receiving
Laboratory: 5) calibrating and operating various radiation detection
instrumentation: 6) responding to emergencies and spills: 7)leak testing
sealed sources: and 8)monitoring dosimetry and bioassay results and
assigning doses as necessary.
Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to design and develop elements of a
radiation safety control program. Demonstrated knowledge of California
Radiation Control Regulations, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
regulations and U.S. Department of Transportation regulations relative to
the control and use of radioactive materials, the shipping and receiving of
radioactive materials, radiation dosimetry, contamination control, radiation
shielding. Theoretical background in radiation protection principles and/or
equivalent experience in the field. Demonstrated ability or conduct detailed
laboratory audits on radioisotope use and machine use.
Demonstrated computer skills to effectively use reporting and scoring system
to write reports, critiques and memos to gain regulatory compliance of the
labs.
In depth knowledge of the principles of external radiation dosimetry
including the relative merits and problems associated with TLDs, film and
electronic dosimeters. In depth knowledge of the principles of biological
uptake and retention/excretion function of the radioisotopes in humans. In
depth knowledge of radioisotope measurement/analysis techniques using:
liquid scintillation, NaI spectroscopy, and survey equipment including
Geiger counters NaI monitors, ion chambers, gas proportional counters.
Effective interpersonal skills to communicate honestly, effectively and
easily with senior research staff, principal investigators and health care
professionals, Proven ability to evaluate radiation spills and situations
requiring first aid or evacuation while minimizing personal exposure and
contamination. Proven ability and willingness ton respond to emergency
situations.
Special Conditions: Must pass a medical examination and be cleared to
perform physical requirements for emergency response and wear respirators.
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and personal protective clothing.
