Scientific studies of radiation effects use physical units of absorbed dose
per unit mass of tissue (Gy or rad) and specify the type and energy of the
ionizing radiation. Dose equivalents or effective dose are useful for
radiation protection purposes, but do not exactly normalize different types
of radiation.
