This article discusses the wildfires around Los Alamos and a press release
yesterday from FEMA that the smoke contains only natural radioactivity,
despite a 10 fold elevation in measured airborne gross alpha, a 2 fold
increase in gross beta, and some unspecified increase in gross gamma activity
in air particulates. The potential increase in man-made radioactivity
residual from weapons' test fallout in burning biomass has not been discussed
by the Federal and State agencies involved in the initial press releases,
leading to heighten concern by many in the area that information is being
withheld.
