Senior Health Physicist



UCLA Office of Environment, Health & Safety announces the following open
position in our Radiation Safety Department:

EH&S Specialist III/Senior Health Physicist    *Salary to commensurate with
experience*

Under the general supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer, assure that
the UCLA Radiation Safety Program is carried out throughout the UCLA campus
and the Medical Center in accordance with the Radiation Protection Manual,
State and Federal regulations.  Lead person responsible for use of
radioisotopes on campus and the Medical Center.  In charge of implementing
and maintaining UCLA human-use research program involving radioisotopes.
Responsible for administering the UCLA non-human use radioactive material
authorization program.  Supervision of three health physicists and indirect
supervision of technicians.  Oversee the implementation of other programs
involving radioisotopes such as inventory, waste, audit, training, etc.
Perform special assignments as directed by the Radiation Safety Officer or
his/her designee.  Participate in dept. emergency response efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific or engineering
field and six years of professional* experience in a radiation protection
program (two of which must be in a research and medical environment) and
successful completion of the Certified Health Physicist (CHP) examination,
or Master's degree in health /medical physics  and four years of
professional* experience in a radation protection program (two of which must
be in a research and medical environment), or Equivalent combination of
training and experience as determined by the RSO.  *Professional level
experience includes: using independent judgement to interpret and apply
regulations and policies, making technical decisions, and working without
appreciable direction. Current health physics experience at a broadscope
type A license with working knowledge of present radiation protection
standards and resommendations of the International Commission on Radiation
Protection (ICRP) and the National Commission on Radiation Protection and
Measurements (NCRP).  Writing skills sufficient to prepare clear, consise
logical and grammatically correct technical reports analysis,
correspondence, etc. for management, faculty, staff, and regulatory
agencies.  Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative
working relationships with coworkers, research personnel, administrative
personnel and regulatory personnel.  Ability to convey clearly and
accurately information to employees safety practices in the handling of
sources of ionizing radiation.  Ability to make effective oral presentations
at seminars, committee meetings and technical symposia.  Demonstrated
working knowledge on the use of radiation detection and measurement
instrumentation.  Familiarity with x-ray regulations pertaining to
registration, operator and room shielding requirements.
