" Temelin nuclear plant not affected by earthquake "
Temelin nuclear plant not affected by earthquake, spokesman says
TEMELIN, South Bohemia, July 11 (CTK) - The moderate earthquake that shook
Austria early this morning and was also felt in parts of the Czech Republic,
especially in south Bohemia near the Austrian border, did not put the
Temelin nuclear power plant at risk, plant spokesman Milan Nebesar told CTK
today.
"The Temelin power plant is prepared for earthquakes. All of the
construction and facilities important from the point of view of nuclear
safety are designed to withstand earthquakes on the 7th level of the scale
in the locality of the power plant," Nebesar said.
The earthquake with an epicentre near Ebreichsdorf in Lower Austria struck
at around 5:00 this morning local time. It measured 4.8 on the Richter
scale.
Earthquake in Austria felt even in Prague
PRAGUE, July 11 (CTK) - A moderate earthquake that shook Austria early this
morning was felt as well not only in south Bohemia, the location of the
Temelin nuclear power plant near the border with Austria, but even by some
people as far away as Prague.
"It woke people up from their sleep, it swung their beds with them, and
glasses rattled," Jan Zednik from the seismology department of the
Geophysical Institute told CTK.
"This earthquake was felt even by people in central and west Bohemia, near
Prague, in Klatovy and in Plzen," Zednik said, adding that it was normal for
earthquakes in the Alps to be felt in the Czech Republic.

SUJB not to suspend loading of fuel to Temelin
PRAGUE, July 10 (CTK) - The State Nuclear Safety Office (SUJB) will not
suspend the loading of nuclear fuel to the first bloc of the nuclear power
station in Temelin, south Bohemia, as demanded by the plant's opponents,
SUJB spokesman Pavel Pitterman told CTK today.
"On Saturday and Sunday the SUJB checked the content of the [latest] appeal
[by environmentalists], and it found no facts which would prompt the need
for the SUJB to issue an injunction," Pitterman said.
