France to rely on nuclear for next 50 yrs?
NucNet News, 260/00, 31 July
France must continue to rely on nuclear power over the next 50
years in order to keep its electricity costs at its lowest,
according to a new report on the country's energy policy options,
completed at the request of Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. The two
main conclusions of the report are: existing nuclear plants should
retain their cost advantage over combined-cycle gas plants, and,
unless gas prices remain stable over the period as a whole, nuclear
is also likely to retain its economic edge when the time comes to
build new generating capacity. The report is available, in French, at
