RE: CHP Part 2
Just some additional notes...
A key element to Part II is time management. You can know all the facts,
figures, and equations in the world, but if you can't clearly and concisely
do a brain dump on paper in a neat and well organized manner over an
average time period of about 15 minutes per question, you will have
problems. Neatness and organization make the question easier to grade and
easier to assign partial credit where it is due. You need to answer all the
required questions (hard to give partial credit if the question has not
been answered).
Do not think that just because a question is worth less points that it will
take less time to answer. I cracked the time problem by reworking some old
exams with a stopwatch...gave myself 15 minutes per question. Also, do not
get caught up in the calculations...it's nice if you have the "right"
answer, but the method used to arrive at an answer is just as important.
There could be more than one "right" answer depending upon assumptions
used-keep your equations/formulations as simple and direct as possible. An
example would be deriving a dose-conversion-factor if you already knew
it...if the derivation wasn't asked for, don't waste precious time doing
it.
Just my experience....

Please respond to

Nicholas,
I passed part II in 2000. Here are some ideas that may be helpful.
Joe Bevelacqua's book "Contemporary Health Physics" is designed to help
prepare candidates for part II of the ABHP exam. He also teaches a
week-long prep course for part II. It is usually advertised in the HPS
Newsletter. I recommend both the course and the book.
Schedule ample review and study time. Work a lot of old exam problems.
Begin at least 4 months prior to the exam. 6 months is better.
When doing problems practice writing clearly and neatly. Communication is
key. Clearly identify any assumptions you make in your models.
Bring a triangle or straightedge to the exam for reading graphs. Bring an
erasable pen that copies legibly.
Know how to use your calculator. I found the linear regression function on
mine helpful for quickly doing linear interpolation between data points.
Review part I type problems also. They are still useful for part II.
Good luck!
