derivation of the term "lead pig"




In a foundry, the molten metal is poured into a "trough"
that has braches coming off of it to individual forms.
When viewed from above is appears as though the forms are
"feeding off the trough" just like pigs. It could also be
seen to appear like piglets feeding off their mother. The
shields we use often have a similarity in shape to theses
"pigs". ASCII drawing below
