Pope calls Chernobyl shut down a wise decision
Observation: Does this imply that the church is on the record of
being "anti-nuclear", calling for the shutdown of all nuclear plants,
or just this troubled unit. How does closing down a plant send a
message of "peace and fraternity"? Is the church now going to
assist the region with enough funds to replace the lost electrical
source, and pay for heating during their cold winter? Very
disturbing.
Pope calls Chernobyl shut down a wise decision
VATICAN CITY, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Pope John Paul said on
Saturday the closure of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in
Ukraine was a wise decision that sent to the world a message of
peace and fraternity.
"Having learned of the wise decision of your government to close
the nuclear plant in Chernobyl, I wish to associate myself with all
those in your country and throughout the world who are pleased by
this significant move," the Pope said in a note to Ukraine's
President Leonid Kuchma.
The Pontiff added that the closure on Friday of the plant which in
1986 caused the world's worst nuclear accident becoming a
symbol of the dangers of atomic power gave "the whole world a
sign of hope for a more sucure and fraternal world."
The Pope is scheduled to visit Ukraine in June.
