Re: NCCHPS January Meeting

To contribute to those interested on detailed study of radiological
accidents, I would like to inform the last IAEA publication on this subject:

1) The Radiological Accident in Lilo, Georgia, - IAEA STI/PUB/1097,
September 2000

2) The Radiological Accident in Yanango, Peru - IAEA STI/PUB/1101, August
2000

3) The Radiological Accident in Istanbul - IAEA STI/PUB/1102, September 2000

Also to suggest, especially for Health Physicists and Physicists in
Medicine, comments on errors, sentiment and lessons to be learned on the
Accidental Overexposure of Radiotherapy Patients in San Jose, Costa Rica,
when 115 patients being treated for neoplasm by radiotherapy were affected.
The IAEA, published document of equal name, Accidental Overexposure of
Radiotherapy Patients in San Jose, IAEA STI/PUB/1027, June 1998.

Subject: NCCHPS January Meeting

January 18, 2001, Thursday evening:

Guest Speaker: Robert Ricks, REAC/TS

Topic: "Radiation Accidents: Historical Perspectives
                 and Selected Recent Cases."

Abstract:

The history and incidence of serious radiation accidents
involving total body, partial body, and contamination are
reviewed. Major accidents caused by criticality's, misuse
of sealed sources, radiation generating devices, serious
intakes, and acute whole body exposures are summarized
using statistical data in the REAC/TS Radiation Accident
Registry. Selected case reviews include accidents in
        Sarov, Russian Federation (1997); Yanango, Peru (1999);
Tokiamura, Japan (1999); and Meet Halfa Qaluobiya, Egypt
(2000) will be presented. The major medical findings are
summarized and the role of the health physicist in accident
        management will be discussed.

Joint meeting with the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the American
Association of Physicists in Medicine (SFBAC AAPM).

Location: Spenger's Fresh Fish Grotto
1919 4th St. just north of University
                Berkeley, CA 94710-1933

Refurbished and restored, this popular old favorite features
a huge menu and a daily "fresh list" of fish. A few old
favorites remain, but the emphasis is definitely upscale and

From Highway 80, either direction: Exit at University Avenue.
If you head east up University Avenue, take three rights to
        reach Fourth Street.

Coming from the south, you may exit and choose the frontage road,
which goes underneath University Ave and allows for a right turn
across the railroad tracks. A right at the first light puts you
on Fourth Street close to Spenger's.
