Re: Thalium Stress Test
A lot of (esp. older) doctors still refer to all radiopharmaceutical stress
testing as Thallium stress test even though they use technetium-99m products
(Cardiolite, Myoview). Some don't know the difference. The cardiologists
and Nuc docs who insist on Thallium do so for physiological reason, depending
on what they are looking for. But for basic screening, Tc-99m is a
reasonable request especially when the hardships of setting off monitors at
your workplace for weeks is a real problem. In a 40 year old, regular stress
or echo may be sufficient, but as stated earlier, one hates to second guess a
patient/physician relationship. It doesn't hurt to call the Nuc Med
department and request Tc-99m if available.
Our doc tells his patients that there are over 300 causes for chest pain. To
rule out the most dangerous, cardiovascular problems, is well worth the
radiation dose and cost of a few simple tests. If you should end up in
cardiac cath and/or surgery, what better way to save/prolong your life. It's
about quantity and quality.
