RE: How DU was used in the production of Pu




The UO3 from Hanford was from the separations plants, such as PUREX, that
reprocessed the fuel from the production reactors.

In addition, in the mid to late 1980's, UO3 was being shipped from the UO3
plant at Hanford to Ashtabula, OH.

Also the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant (also known as K-25 and now
ETTP) processed reactor returns from both the Hanford and Savannah River
Production Reactors.

On the enriched U side, enriched uranyl-nitrate from the Savannah River
reprocessing facilities was shipped to Y-12 in Oak Ridge until
suspended/stopped by DOE in the mid to late 1980's.

     -What was the source of the U03 from Hanford? If it was from Pu
production reactors, it would be depleted and therefore less efficient as
a feed for a GDP than natural U.
