Re: New book series

... and at $155.00 USD (etc.), quite a bargain! Are all these textbooks
made of gold anymore? Steven Hawking's books still go for less than $40.00
and are easier to read. Most of the "research level" publications I've
read lately read like my high school physics teacher lectured. "Mumble,
mumble, equation, mumble, mumble, graph." Sigh. Maybe I should shut up
until I write a book, but gee wiz, Mr. Wizard, who would read it?

Sorry, bad week. We have been updating our library. Could you tell? I
wasn't picking on you personally, Keith. Much :-)

Have a good weekend all.

     RADIOACTIVITY IN THE ENVIRONMENT

     Series Editor, M. Baxter, Ampfield House, Clachan Seil, Argyll,
     Scotland PA34 4TL, UK

     This new book series on environmental radioactivity addresses, at
     academic research level, the key aspects of this socially important
     and complex interdisciplinary subject. Presented objectively and with
     the ultimate authority gained from the many contributions by the
     world's leading experts, the negative and positive consequences of
     having a radioactive world around us will be documented and given
     perspective. In a world in which nuclear science is not only less
     popular than in the past but also less extensively taught in
     universities and colleges, this book series will hopefully fill a
     significant educational gap.

     At its core the series will consist of books on each of the big basic
     subjects including:

     radioactivity in the terrestrial, marine and atmospheric environments;
      transfers of radioactivity through ecosystems;
      predictive modelling of radioactivity transport and distributions;
      isotopes as tracers;
      speciation and microbiological mediation of radionuclides;
     health effects of environmental radioactivity to both humans and biota
     and public perceptions and understanding of radioactivity in the
     environment.

     In addition to the above purpose-written core books there will be a
     sub-series of selected books based on research conferences on
     specialised subjects. These volumes will contain only peer-reviewed,
     revised and improved contributions, and provide an opportunity to
     collect together the best cutting-edge researchers on "hot topics".

     In this comprehensive series the reader will find detailed and
     authoritative scientific answers to the commonly asked and key
     questions about radioactivity in the environment. It complements
     Elsevier Science's ongoing coverage of research on this important
     topic via the Journal of Environmental Radioactivity
     (www.elsevier.com/locate/jenvrad), for nearly 20 years the only
     dedicated forum for dissemination of new developments in the field.

     VOL 1, Plutonium in the Environment : Edited Proceedings of the Second
     Invited International Symposium, November 9-12, 1999, Osaka, Japan
     Edited by: Professor A. Kudo, Kyoto University, Research Reactor
     Institute, Noda, Kumatori, Sennan-Gun, Osaka-Fu, 590-0494 Japan

     Year 2001
     Hardbound
     ISBN: 0-08-043425-8
     464 pages
     Price: NLG 315, Euro 142.94,  USD 155

     - The first volume of the new series, Radioactivity in the
     Environment, focuses on the environmental occurrence, the speciation,
     the behaviour, the fate, the applications and the health consequences
     of that much-feared and much-publicised element, plutonium. Featuring
     a collection of selected, peer-reviewed, up-to-date papers by leading
     researchers in the field, this work provides a state-of-the-art
     description of plutonium in the environment.
     - Plutonium is a widely misunderstood element. Contrary to common
     belief, it has always occurred naturally. In this volume the state of
     current knowledge about the chemistry, physics, biology, transfers,
     modelling and consequences of plutonium occurrence is explored,
     including a review of some future research needs.
     - This title helps to explain where present frontiers are drawn in our
     continuing efforts to understand the science of environmental
     plutonium and will help to place widespread concerns into perspective.

     CONTENTS:

     Foreword  (M. S. Baxter)
     Preface (A. Kudo).

     Introduction: Origins and Occurrence of Plutonium.

     Analytical Methodologies.

     Speciation and Distribution of Plutonium in the Environment.

     Case Studies.
