Tepco's Plan to Use Recycled Nuclear Fuel Rejected, Nikkei Says

Tepco's Plan to Use Recycled Nuclear Fuel Rejected, Nikkei Says

Tokyo, Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Tokyo Electric Power Co. will have its
plan to feed its nuclear power plants with recycled fuel blocked by
Fukushima Prefecture, the Nihon Keizai newspaper said, citing the
prefecture's governor.

Eisaku Sato said he'll reject the plan as the decision by Japan's
biggest power company to freeze construction of thermal power
generators in Fukushima, north-east of Tokyo, has nurtured a sense of
distrust among local residents, according to the paper.

Fukushima hosts two of Tepco's three nuclear power plants. The
company aimed to start using the recycled fuel at one of them as
early as April. Tepco President Nobuya Minami said the company will
continue to do its utmost to win local support, according to the
paper.

Rejection of the plan could cause other local governments to follow
suit, threatening Japan's national policy to promote the use and
recycling of spent nuclear fuel at home, the paper said.
