I don't know the dose rate in the Van Allen belt but the spacecraft would
have gone through at a gret enough speed that I doubt the doses would have
exceeded the cosmic ray doses to which the astronauts were subjected.
Yes there was actually a moon landing. I imagine the TV charge of a
simulation started from an interesting episode during the second manned space
shot (1959?), It is true that for this space shot, the communication between
the manned satellite and NASA was simulated for TV broadcast. I saw it
myself on TV in the lab. NASA took a lot of heat for that -- justifiably --
and I don't think such a simulation was ever repeated
