Australian Radiation authority to prepare cancer fact sheet
Radiation authority to prepare cancer fact sheet

Australia's radiation authority is to issue new advice, following an
assessment of a British report into the link between power lines
and some cancers.
The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency
(ARPANSA) says the evidence in the report is not new or strong
enough to conclude that electromagnetic fields definitely cause
leukaemia in children.
But there is still the possibility there may be a link.
The CEO of ARPANSA, Dr John Loy, says the British research,
released last week, shows no good evidence low-frequency,
electromagnetic fields cause cancer.
But there is some evidence prolonged exposure to higher levels is
associated with a small risk of leukaemia in children.
Dr Loy says ARPANSA will prepare a new fact sheet to inform the
public of the findings.
He has also recommended reliable and consistent measurements
of exposures to electromagnetic fields along with a new survey to
build up a clearer picture of the level of exposure in Australia.
