ANSTO plays down French refusal of spent nuclear fuel

Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation
(ANSTO) has played down claims by Greenpeace that a shipment
of spent nuclear fuel from the Lucas Heights research reactor may
have to be returned to Australia.
A French court has asked for more information about the shipment
before the waste can be unloaded there.
The delay has been brought about by court action by Greenpeace.
The waste being carried by a ship, owned by Cogema, docked in
France yesterday.
ANSTO, which runs the Lucas Heights research facility, says the
organisation has shipped spent fuel to France several times before
for reprocessing.
But Democrats deputy leader Natasha Stott Despoja says the
Federal Government must now halt plans for a new reactor at
Lucas Heights.
The local Sutherland Council went one further, demanding the
existing reactor be shut down.
This afternoon, Industry Minister Nick Minchin stepped in, rejecting
claims there would be any backing away from a new nuclear
research reactor at Lucas Heights.
