Clifford G. Shull

Shared a Nobel Prize

for atomic particle work

MEDFORD, Mass[achusetts, USA] -- Clifford G.

Shull, a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in

physics in 1994, died Saturday [March 31, 2001]

after a brief illness. He was 85.

Mr. Shull's Nobel Prize, which he shared with

Professor Bertram S. Brockhouse of McMaster

University in Canada, was awarded for pioneering

work in neutron scattering -- a technique that

reveals where atoms are within a material, just

as ricocheting bullets reveal where obstacles

are in the dark.

The ideas in Mr. Shull's work have been used

to study ceramic superconductors and the

structure of viruses.

Mr. Shull was a professor emeritus at the

Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
