Congressional Briefing

Radsafers that are members of the Health Physics Society may be

aware that the Society hosted a congressional briefing last month

to inform members of congress and their staff about radiation and

its effects. The briefing, presented in cooperation with

Representatives Vernon Ehlers (R-MI-3) and John Larson (D-CT-1),

was titled "What We Know, and Don't Know About Radiation

Health Effects. Three oral presentations were made:

Radiation Exposure - A Fact of Life by Dade Moeller,

What We Know and What We Don't Know About Radiation Health

Effects - Genevieve Roessler, and

Fair Compensation for Radiation Injury - Donald Jose.

HPS President, Paul Rohwer opened the briefing with welcoming

remarks; Congressional Liaison, Keith Dinger moderated the

question and answer period; and Past President Ray Johnson

displayed radioactive materials in consumer products.

There were many signs that the briefing was well received, from the

attendance (about 50) to evaluation comments.

More information, including the slides used in the presentations, is

available on the HPS website: http://www.hps.org.
