Re: Fw: Russian Waste Repository
I am sorry that this thread on the Russian Waste Repository has turned
into one on ocean disposal. I believe ocean disposal is a good idea and
worth its own thread. I'll try to start one later.
The point I tried to make on the Russian waste repository is that from
an American standpoint, it would be an excellent way of getting it out of
our backyard. If nuclear waste were all that dangerous (which it is not!),
at least the problems of perceived risk would be transfered to somewhere
else-- A sound political solution to a political problem. In all my
experience
with nuclear waste, it seems that science and technology have never been
allowed to interfere with the government's decision making process.
Nuclear waste has been and still is a political problem!
In this regard, it was interesting to note Jaro's question-
"...what were the problems with this -- other than political incorrectness?"
That reminds me of another the old question--
Other than that, how did you enjoy the play Mrs. Lincoln?

Ruth -- I don't know which SNF ocean disposal scheme you're talking about,
but I think there is (was, proposed) at least one that is very attractive
from both economic & safety point of view: it involves fission products
ONLY (ie. from reprocessing SNF) mixed with glass, which are sealed in heavy
metal cylinders shaped like slender missiles. These accelerate by gravity to
very high speed when "dropped overboard," and upon hitting the deep ocean
floor, penetrate dozens of feet into the sediment there. Sounds like a
one-way trip, for sure !!
Was this one of the options you were studying ? ...what were the problems
with this -- other than political incorrectness
